I had cracked side plates on two 6700 chains and use Tiagra CN-4601 now, the difference between 6701 and 6700 might be one is directional.

I think they're both directional but I may be wrong.

I'd be surprised if there were any difference between them that's worth worrying about - unless you're a Shimano engineer. If I had to pick one or the other, I'd choose whichever was the cheaper.

Think your right, the previous CN-6600 I think is the one that's not directional.
