Uncomfortable truths

I record my rides, including utility, privately on Garmin, because I like to be able to see what I've done and because my club has a mileage competition. It's never seemed likely to me that anyone else would be interested, nor do I want to publicise my address, even privately, so I never use my dormant Strava account

Lefty tighty. Get it righty.
Competing against your own times is OK -

So is competing against other people's. Or not competing at all. Its all OK in my book. Do whatever you want.

Spot on . There is no right or wrong in this situation and there are definitely no ‘ uncomfortable truths’ in it either.
Tbh the whole premise of this thread is a little ‘ odd ‘.
If I had seen the op comment on fb I would have immediately dismissed it as a troll post . 😀

Yes - competing is fine

but you don't know what kind of bike they were on - maybe even an ebike
and you don't know the weather conditions they were riding in
or whether or not they were drafting behind other riders in a group

If you want to do it then that's up to you
and to be fair I do check where I am on a few segments sometimes

but that's me - if it makes you happy - or feel better in any way - then it is fine

It’s not about doing what ever makes you happy. Even though that’s good. It’s about when people slip into depression, split up with the Mrs or generally going through a bad time they “go off Strava”.

across the Runcorn-Widnes bridge
Used to be quite a challenge just getting across the bridge in the 60's. So many chemical smells coming from the Mersey below.

Hopefully it's a bit cleaner now.

on the other hand - the segments seem pointless to me anyway
for example - I got 3rd on one segment across the Runcorn-Widnes bridge at one point
(private so only I could see it)
but it was unfair - not because I was on an ebike as I was doing well over the motor cutoff the whole way
but because there was an amazing tail wind the whole way through it

The more often you ride a segment, the more likely your fastest time will be from a tailwind.:okay:

I understand the positive reasons for using it, I like you and many others I’m sure have friends near and far whom we keep in touch with on Strava. My comment was aimed at the op who seems to worry unduly about people who have used it a then choose not to engage with it for personal reasons?

What makes you want to worry about what anyone else does? I find it a bit odd.

Me too. It feels a bit "stalkerish". Sure if it's someone you know and see that they're not doing something they used to do you might worry whether they're ok. But why would you care if someone changed their publicity on a social media app to make it private?

There is no point in fretting about things over which you have no control. Others live their lives, and deal with situations as best they can. At worst, it will just drag you down and make your own life less happy, or make you into an angry person. If things happen to someone you know and you are able to help, that's great, but otherwise, you can't carry the world's problems on your own back, even the problems you know about, let alone the ones that you have no way of knowing about. You might extrapolate that they are making their rides private for the reasons you state, but there are probably a million and one other reasons for people doing such things and most of them are probably harmless.
Sometimes, you just need to stand back a bit and let things go. It is good to be concerned for others, but don't let this spoil your own enjoyment of the ride.

Speaking as a non Strava using person.

Which for most of the population is normal because as human beings we only have limited ability to deal with ‘ stuff ‘ and for most people ‘ doing strava ‘ is not at the top of their priorities especially when important things are going on in their lives .
I sort of understand where you are trying to come from, I think and it’s coming from a good place . BUT you have a very odd way of trying to express your point.
