I know that R2 directs cyclists over the cliff between Brighton and Saltdean, but was wondering if the lower route is cycle friendly?
I have read old posts on the net, which shows some discussion around 2009, potentially opening this undercliff walk to cycling, but can't confirm whether this has happened?
Can anyone advise?
This might be our preferred route to Newhaven next year for our ride to Paris.

I missed this bit. LOL

You're cycling from Brighton to Paris, and the bit you are worrying about it getting to Newhaven?
Well, it's like this.... the bit from home to Brighton, I know - because I've done most of it over the years.... so the next bit, the bit you kindly googled for me, is actually, the next bit.... if you get me??
Now I understand this bit, it's a look at the next bit - the bit after this bit, will be my next bit to look at.... and so on.... and then I'll know the whole route to Paris.
It comes from 2 very good quotes I heard a few years ago.... the first was "Look before you leap" and the 2nd was "Proper planning prevents poor performance", which I realise, amount to almost the same thing, but I try never to leap, before a performance. Thanks for the google BTW!

If it's any use to you, I did London (Twickenham) to Paris via Dieppe last year, albeit with somewhat less planning than this.
A good write-up jef, and I'd be happy to do similar, but my OH wouldn't be happy to blast there like that - for us, it'll be about a gentle pootle along to Paris, hence the need for planning - she is still now to single cycling, having been spoiled on the tandem for the last 4 years, and her hill ability is low, but getting better - we did 40 miles this weekend, and she was pleased to have managed a 40m long slope! But we're getting there - I don't want her to have to put up with something she won't enjoy!

If you are thinking about the Avenue Verte, have a good look at its route. The bits on converted railway, where it is good, it is fine for an individual or a small group. Where it runs out of available converted track though it just does silly things to keep you off the busier roads.

This is my first plan, to follow almost exactly the Donald Hirsch route, but I have to plan where possible around a 30 mile day, but I want to have great places to stay - not just a bed for the night, so early planning will get me ready to early book, maybe in January..

The Netherlands are cycling paradise for people who prefer little to no hilliness and smooth, traffic free paths.
Yes, I read something about The Netherlands and Belgium here yesterday evening.... this is on the cards for possibly a 2nd ride next year too, but this will depend on how the Paris trip goes
