Unfortunately let the new corporate IT Nazi get hold of my work laptop.
Disabled a lot of stuff and removed Fire-fox.
Am now running I.E. but find that the ability to right-click on an image and set as background has been diabled. There is no way to change the background now...
Was gonna put the "Sheldon is my Co-Pilot" piccy as background.

Cannot use saved images as background either.

Is there a fix or work-around...I hate it when thos IT boys apply the rules....;)

No. If it's been done by group policy, there is no workaround.

If users didn't put rubbish software on their machines wasting our time fixing them, and hideous naked Hasselhof wallpaper, we wouldn't need to lock you down.

That is all.

Our wonderful IT department have more or less rendered my new laptop unusable - I'm not even allowed to delete shortcut icons from the desktop! It takes 5 bl**dy minutes to load up RealPlayer, Winzip shortcuts and all sorts of poo and I can't do a damn thing about it.

To hell with productivity, to hell with trust - IT doesn't want you using your tools in the most efficient manner. IT's only concern is to cover their own *rses (much like HR).

Outsource the lot of them I say. IT departments should work for US. If I want a Hasslehoff wallpaper, then the Hoff it is! I have to stare at the damn thing all day.

Trust me, outsourcing your IT will make things worse. Your IT department will be 250 miles away (if not 2.5 continents) and if you shout at us we can hang up.

*glad he doesn't work on an outsourced IT helpdesk anymore*

Uh-huh. but you don't want your computers to be crippled by viruses, or not be able to save files 'cause the servers full of your digital camera pics or your MP3 files and when you lose that e-mail you need IT to get it back or if you change computers you want exactly the same stuff as you had before and you need to access your stuff anywhere, right? not too mention all that legal mumbo jumbo about data protection and keeping key data for so many years. Nor to mention stopping anyone nicking that project you've just put two years of your life into and when the office burns down it'd be really convenient if IT could get everything back and working in two days, in fact why does it take them so long  Nor stop those waster temps surfing porn all day rather than doing some work that they're paid to do.

Nope! You just want that really nice picture of the woods as your background: Cool. <retort rant off> ;)

PS. If you can't change anything FF it doesn't sound good. Get on his good side

god knows.
if you haven't been given admin privileges, then just take it as read that you're not the sort that's MEANT to be trusted. No offence, but there's blatantly a reason for it. The same as the reason why you're not allowed to do murders just 'cos you think "but I know who needs murdering!"
;):rolleyes::blush::rolleyes:
get another job if it's that much of a problem
or mount a campaign to get the corporate standard wallpaper changed to jennifer anniston

I once recieved an "IT warning" for having a picture of my bike as a background on my work computer.

I phoned up to query this, as the person who put it on was the same person who sent me the warning!!

And the only reason I had the pic on the computer to begin with was the IT person had asked to see a picture of my bike.

He did say "oops" when I pointed all this out to him. ;)

the IT thing is bizarre. i've seen in go from being something that existed to help you do your job, to something that you have to put up with to do it.

sorry if any here are IT folk, but i can't think of a better example of the tail wagging the dog. and it's the reason that windows will always beat the mac os in the corporate world, more IT people are needed to run windows networks than are needed to run a mac network. so no surprise that IT people like windows then.

i'm lucky that, for some reason, my work machine has not had all the policy bollocks implemented, so i can make it feel like my computer, not just a.n. other terminal.

They get away with it at my place by making sure the directors get great kit.

I got £350-worth pissed off and bought my own laptop. My work one sits on its docking station in clear breach of the anti-theft IT policy. However I told them it was a personal risk to carry it home.

ANd I need it for locality and training work so no they can't replace it with a desktop unit.

I think they really like me now.

In my experience, the worst offenders when it comes to breaching corporate IT policies are the IT Dept and the management that make the rules! They have all manner of crap loaded on their machines!!

Your right Alex etc. I have a pc (laptop) at work and a mac. They don't go near the mac.

Partly because I growl in a defensive lion way if they try.

My mac works fine. The Pc falls over twice a day.

ring IT up "you've not set my e-mail account up yet, could you do so please?"

"yeh, send us an e-mail outlining what needs doing and we'll do it"

"i would if i'd got the e-mail account working, which is what i'm asking you to do"

"ok, we'll e-mail you with your username and password for it"

its at this point my dad got up, walked down the corridor to the IT dep for his team and put his hand over the power switch for the servers and network and asked them again.

it got done quite quickly

the only reason he was needing it setting up:

he'd accidentally hit someone in the head with a memory stick he'd thrown to someone down the office, the person he hit had been doing a risk assessment!

Bloody IT. I've spent the last week in IT Hell because our Superb Hospital IT department (hereafter referred to as the S.H.I.T.s) specified cheap and nasty Dells throughout, and three out of four blew up in one week. A known fault on the motherboard, but one which they chose to overlook in favour of the cheap price.

In the process of installing a replacement they managed to delete my roaming profile. Still can't manage to get the printer networked though. Fortunately most of my files live on the network drive and are backed up on my own laptop, but I still lost all my emails and my stock-take for this month.

Bloody incompetent S.H.I.T. tossers, they're worse than the Users for wrecking the network.
