Some people have strange ideas about some places.

A few years ago we went to Croatia. We told a friend of ours where we were off to, and he looked at us as though we'd just announced we were going to parachute into Normandy on a particularly nice day in June...

Syria is great. The Syrians are some of the warmest and most hospitable people you can meet.
.
Yes, I've been there too... only to Damascus though... some of it was modern, grtotty, dirty, but the old bits were lovely, and as you say, the hospitality was wonderful. I even managed to get a bit sozzled there

I don't know why, but I would like to go to Holland. I've wanted to go for a long time, just not got round to it yet.

I wouldn't have thought of Holland as an unpopular destination.
We've been to Amsterdam a couple of times and really enjoyed it.
Depending where you live you can get cheap ferry crossings.

Apart from putting mayonnaise on their chips which is pretty unforgivable I'm not sure you could describe the Netherlands as unpopular.

Fair enough, but it's not on the top of most people holiday destinations is it? And as for putting mayonnaise on chips, now't wrong with that, even more reason to go as far as I'm concerned.
No, not rollmops - they're kind of 'cooked' in the vinegar. It's hollandse nieuwe haring - small raw herrings, gutted, left for a day in a barrel full of brine, and then eaten just like that without any more cooking.

It's an acquired taste but I never managed to acquire it.
Ahh yes! I have those too, in Finland. Double ugh!

Me too. And Chile.

Whereabouts? I loved Patagonia, but thought Santiago was extremely dull. It had none of the buzz to be found in other S. American cities. That said, I could've done without an earthquake to liven things up!

Delicious. Raw herring, white bun, raw onions. Compulsory stop on any bike ride.

A few years ago I did think Libya and North Korea would be interesting places to visit, I'm currently looking at a tour of Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. Find the normal destinations boring

I'm off to Libya in April for a few days on business. I'll be under armed guard for most of the time, I'll let you know what I think of it!!
I've been to Armenia. Yerevan, the capital was very nice, although I got food poisoning on my last day from eating trout, and I can confirm the loo roll at Yerevan airport is rough!
