What's good in chainrings and chains for fixed?

My understanding is that lathed chainrings are more symmetrical than pressed and therefore leave less in the way of tight/slack spots. Should I be looking at any specific brands/materials?

Also, is there a specific name for the rear cog? I can't find many and don't know what I should be searching for.

Thanks

I would say that you get more tight/slack points due to the fitting on the spider that you do from how it is made. Can't comment on make/material.

Rear cog is known as the sporocket. At least that is what I call mine.

The drive side crank has 5 (or 4) arms that the chainring bolts onto. For some reason this is called the spider.

The Miche Advanced crankset is excellent, not too pricey, and looks great

+1 for Miche.

SRAM PC1-N chains last a long time for me and I put them through quite a bit of crap.
