Upside downery.

I've been disturbed recently by several pictures of upside down bikes. Upside down pictures make me squirm in my chair. I wince and narrow my eyes slightly. My hands twitch on the keyboard ready to admonish and elucidate. Upside down in a puddle was the worst; I cried a bit. Especially as the Garmin was still on it.

Do not do this. I speak as one who has seen the light and is an evangelist to upside downers. You will, in no particular order. Scratch your hoods, mucky them, bend their cables, scratch their covers. You will forget your computer as you scrape it through the mud, You will muddy your saddle and hence soil your shorts. But worst, you will look like an amateur and elicit tuts, smirks and shakes of the head.

A gentle laying down of the bike is all that is required to preserve dignity. I plead, nay beseech, that you leave behind your upside downess.

It annoys me when I see someone turn their bike upside down to simply put on a chain.... :cursing: although I ticked the never box ... there are extremely rare occasions (that I can't think of) when I have done.... but only after trying other options (I remember I did so recently but can't think why...but it irked me at the time, though I took care).

Sorry but I always do it when repairing a puncture unless I'm at home and have the workstand available.

As to scratching the hoods, Lelly cost me £2000. The third time she went out of the house was the night of the infamous Emsworth Friday Night Ride to the Coast. Anything I do to the hoods by turning her upside down to fix a puncture will be unnoticeable in the collection of scars she bears from that night.

Sounds a bit apocalyptic. I knew these Friday night larks were no good.

My sentiment exactly, I'd rather scratch my hoods, fixing a roadside puncture (oh boo frickety hoo), than risk bending a rear mech, then ride off, and instantly have a much more serious issue than scratched hoods, or a puncture.

The top of my duvet is the very definition of upside downiness. Meanwhile, I have no truck with this anti-inverted snobbery. On the road it's the easiest way of getting a wheel in and out. Even putting a rear wheel back in again on a bike with a rear dérailleur on a stand is unnecessarily fiddly. Up with the downside uppers!

I just just knock it down into its side and try not to stand on it too much when repairing it.
That's exactly it. There are far more important components at risk with a side laying bike. One guy I rode with last year, decided to put the bike on its side, whilst he repaired a rear puncture. He didn't notice his front Q.R. skewer cam, had opened, as he righted the bike. He soon noticed, when we resumed the ride though:B).
