... But only about a handful of time, over a number of years (decades) I've had to talk about the use of "Paki" or "Nigger" as an acceptable use of terminology in a UK environment. FFS.

I don't expect to go into an informal social environment like a cafe and have to deal with Paki and Nigger talk.
I believe there's one such thread. So does this not equate to a handful in real terms?

How exactly did you 'have to deal' with it? Why did you feel the need to involve yourself?

I wrote a lengthy post stating I don't find swear words offensive. And stating I do find racist language far worse. And that I find it odd that one thing is censored and the other isn't.

But when I posted it, it didn't get posted. But that's the gist of it.

Chill cracker...

Agreed - and I would echo my previous advice for people to report such content as early as possible so that the mod team can review / address / delete it where necessary.

I've removed the thread from view.

Should never have been given the time of day in any part of CC, IMO.

Inappropriate content - Do not post anything that is obscene, vulgar, contains sexual imagery or text, is racist (including slang), hateful, threatening, or otherwise inappropriate for a cycling forum. Common sense should guide you in this.

^ this. Says it all really. Seems some are missing a fair bit of the first 2 words, last sentence.

Do you know what they say about common sense? It's not very common.

If we are talking about the "Non PC" thread I think it did more to combat patent stupidity, err, excuse me, racism, than it did to promote it.

For some reason people seem far more likely to tell you their true feelings online than they do face to face. As such you get a real insight into that they really think as opposed to the socially censured version. That is a good thing in my view. You do not win the battle for hearts and minds by badgering people into submission or hiding views you feel uncomfortable with away from the light so they can fester and take root.

Open dialogue, debate and yes a bit of taking the Michael (yes what I did there? Did you?) is much better.

Whether that type of thread has a place in a light hearted section of the forum, or at all is a different matter. I think they way it was handled by the Mods here was good.

Surely it is not acceptable to use such language in a Bernard Manning style rant or joke.
But if we discuss the use of the words or swearing then surely we can use the words in the context of discussing their use.

This is an inclusive online community, not a KKK meeting. There are battles that have been won. If you want to use the words in a film or a play or a novel then you can justify it to yourself or others as the context requires. That's not what is happening here. Speech is an act. It's not about giving or taking offence, but about discrimination and the basic conditions for equality. When white people bleat about their "right" to use language that inscribes inequality and violence, they are not discussing meaning but insisting on their right to perpetuate inequality. I shouldn't have to endure anyone saying to me "Do you mind if I call you bitch?" - it's not a question, because by the time they have asked it, they have already done it. So why should anyone log on to Cycle Chat to hear someone saying "Do you mind if I call you Paki?"

I think you may find you are shooting yourself in the foot here.
