I can sort-of understand that as poorer people more likely to buy 2nd hand but not per se antique furniture have likely also got smallish digs so large stuff simply won't fit. I got some astonishingly good extra large dark wood wardrobes for my v large flat for very reasonable money as a result so someone can be lucky.

Edit: flat had small number of v large rooms rather than being some kind of lavish penthouse just to be clear

we needed to ditch a working washing machine and tumble dryer as we'd not realised the previous owners were leaving them behind. Tried to give away ti charity, but there were hoops to go through (wouldn't pick them up from outside - we had to be in - why?) so we ended up paying the council to dump em which is a waste and a shame. Maybe I could have used fleabay with 99p start - or maybe a £10 buy it now refundable on pick up. Tok late, gone now
Ended up taking a fridge freezer to the local recycling center for similar reasons. Too big for where they were moving to.

whilst we're on the subject - would anyone like a tall fridge freezer free gratis and for nothing in a couple of months' time? Built-in to cupboard stylee - Bristol? We're doing our kitchen - unless I'm out of a job in the forthcoming recession of course

The world we live in - furniture like many things is so short-termist, many people have to be so on-trend with what they have. No one wants 'old fashined' stuff any more.

All it takes is some moronic house styling show, presented by that faux oh-so-friendly-you-can-feel-the-chemistry duo whose names elude me, to declare that something is 'out' and is now replaced by something that is 'in' and you have a stampede to the nearest DFS/DFS clone store.

They do, there are two companies that I know of locally the really do do little more than chalk paint old furniture into money.

People with wood burning stoves are usually pleased to accept old furniture if you saw it up into manageable pieces and deliver it:smile:.
Just last week I came across a heavy round hardwood table and chairs in a layby. I returned in my car loaded it in and took it all home for dismantling and sawing up before offering it to a grateful disabled guy.

Hahaha reminds me of the time someone was advertising a wooden framed sofa for free in a facebook group it was massive, so I contacted him & arranged pickup. His face was a picture when I arrived in my honda civic to pick it up but he soon got the idea when I sawed it in half so I could get it in the car :giggle:

A similar thing happened when I went to pick up a load of fencing someone was giving away, its not like you could use it as fencing the bottom was all rotten. I am still dealing with that there was loads.

I was once out shopping and I spotted someone had fly tipped a bed in the corner of the car park and the slats where all rolled up neatly into a bundle they fitted nicely onto the boot of my car.
