Using a bike cam on your commute..?

Feel free to elaborate on your philosophy of bike cam use in general - for commuting or otherwise...

Yep I use a bike cam on my commute. My prinary use it you, hopefully, learn from those instances where things dont go quite right and what to look out for to, again hopefully, prevent a recurrence in the future.

I started to use one as I've quite a few nasty close passes recently, the turning point was an articulated Pinden lorry that pulled back over on to me punishment type pass on a wet day leaving me to brake on an ever narrowing drain filled road (I papped myself and thought I was going under the wheels)
So I thought in the event of an accident at the very least me or someone would be able to identify why and how it happened and possibly be able to id the other parties.

I used to have all sorts of confrontations when I first started cycling again, I contributed to many of them. It was only when I made the effort to just "let it go" that cycling became enjoyable for me. A camera only has negative connotations for me and we'll all end up worse if every driver and every rider uses one..............IMO.

I now use one on my commute.
Last year I was involved in an accident when a car pulled out in front of me while I was doing 30mph. I have no recollection of the accident, an hour preceeding it, or the 6 hours after. I was off work for a year and I would have been out of pocket if the driver had just driven off, so I film the commute and any rides where I am in heavy traffic (in my experience that is where most incidents seem to happen) I rarely bother to look at the footage and just overwrite the card when I get home.

Edit to say that the accident happened on the quiet country roads of my commute rather than the city centre, so it goes to show you do not know where or when something will happen, but I am happy to have the camera just in case.

In sussex. Rural B/C road commute between two towns 20km apart. Yep I've used one for sure. Well two actually. Forward-facing and Rearward-facing.

But I ain't ever gonna put the footage online. anywhere.

My approach. tlh and the younglings know I use(d) the cams. If the worst happened I wanted plod, and my family, to know what had happened so some nobber driver could not get off scot-free by claiming the old "suicide swerve" did for the Grumpster.

Ive bought one, but its just for taking photos during the ride and for my family to see if anything happens to me

I also use the rural canal and cycle tracks which would giveme some good video footage of routes etc

But it wont be posted online to show any sort of driver/cyclist issues as thats not what i got it for

Like I said above mine's purely for recording an accident (that I hope never happens) opposed to naming and shaming on youtube, wouldn't want to be out of pocket from a hit and run.
