Dad was a bit confused and miffed today when I brought up the topic of the VED disc and that he won't get an actual disc of paper to stick in his windscreen from next month. "how's that going to work then?" ha asked in a state of irritation and a wee tea spillage. "Cars, trucks and motorbikes etc won't have tax discs because it's all on the internet and computers," I explained. "How will people know if a car is taxed then?" he asked. I said "it's like the council tax. People don't stick their council tax bills in living room windows proving they've paid it do they." Dad liked this explanation and the matter was closed.

He's got a point though, is it easier for a copper to glance at windscreens as he's walking along, or radio in every reg number to check?

Well there no coppers on the beat anymore are there? He will be replaced by a van or car driving down the road with an array of cameras connected to a ANPR computer. Pings up an offender, a tow truck is called. There's no escape, Big Brother is here!
