They've got a huge backlog at the dealerships. I was given a May appointment for mine when I enquired in January.

Even bigger savings to be made by banning diesels, and the sooner the better.
That's hardly fair. Yesterday the government was encouraging citizens to buy diesel, now they're penalising them for doing so. I think it should be phased out, rather than banned.

Drivers should pay based on:

1. How heavy the car is.
2. How powerful it is.
3. Distance driven annually.
4. How much footprint the car takes up on the road.
5. If the car will normally be parked off the road.
6. Some form of pollution control but idk how to enforce that last bit.

You have electric and hybrid, petrol and diesel, hydrogen and probably some other powerplant, some are very powerful, some not so much. An electric car could produce as much power as a petrol one but they should be taxed differently as they produce different amounts of pollution for the same amount of power.

Right now it seems to be based on your ability to pay. For example if a car costs over £40k, you have to pay more tax.

Just been listening to Radio 4, a bit of a discussion about vehicle emissions, the forthcoming diesel Toxicity Tax in London, and how during on road testing VW vehicles were churning out as much crud as a typical HGV.

And then it hit me.

Road tax from year 3 onwards should be based upon the emissions from the MOT. The better condition, and better maintained your car, the less you pay.

Manufacturers can't cheat it, and it encourages people to maintain their car, thus giving us cleaner air.

In fact, the MOT emissions figure could be multiplied by the previous years mileage, which would also incentivise people to drive less.
A genuinely good idea. Fortunately like most good ideas it'll never happen (said the guy with the 20 year old indifferently-maintained Golf).

Are they going to map the cars back to where the emisisons should be or fit modified parts? Not read anything on this yet.

No idea. I'm changing my car next week to a new Touran. VW say it only emits bunny farts and lavender so it should be fine.

From the letters I've had, it's a software update only. I've been waiting over a year for mine now.

Sounds like its being de-tuned then so will loose some power and drivability. Not fair for the people who bought based on what they had driven.

I don't think you can lose power or driveability on a 1.6 diesel Passat

No, they won't lose power but they will use a bit more fuel. These cars have a catalyst that converts NOx into its harmless components. However, this converter requires that bit more fuel is used to activate it. What VW did was to rig the car so that it knows when it is being tested and that it only burns the extra fuel when tested for NOx. The inputs for this cheat was static steering (on a dyno you don't use the steering wheel, relative wheel speeds (again, corners), bonnet open/closed and some other stuff I've now forgotten. In order to make customers smile, VW basically rigged the car so that it didn't consume the extra fuel to burn off the NOx and gave the customer a smile in terms of better fuel consumption. I believe the figure is about 0.8l/100km saving if you don't burn off the NOx. The new software will now activate the NOx burner so that the car catalyses the bad NOx as it drives, not just when it is tested.
It really was a crime of enormous proportions. It is very serious indeed.
