Velopark - where to stay?

I am looking at combining a trip to the Velopark with some sightseeing.

I don't know London at all, I would be getting the train into Euston then would be list from there. Should I get accommodation somewhere central ie Covent Garden, or nearer Velopark?

Does the tube run to the Velopark?

Assuming you mean the one in Stratford then you'll find cheaper hotels there then near Euston. However you'll be outside central London which can be fun to stay in. There are cheaper hostels nr Euston which are acceptable if basic. Nr Stratford is nice to cycke around too, the park and Victoria park.

Stratford is easy to tube to. On central and jubilee lines plus dlr. If you have your bike it's 20 mins ride from Euston.

Hi Bella, if you're going to the velopark at the olympic park the closest station is Stratford. There are various tube and overground lines that stop there, but the most direct route from central london would probably be the central line, which should take you about 20 mins (mind you, can't get bikes on the tube unless they're foldable, and even then you might find that the tube is too full for them at rush hour).

Re where to stay... I'd say it depends on what kind of landscape you like, your budget, what else you'd like to do while you're here, and willingness to travel.

You can't get a non folding bike on the Tube, but you can on the Docklands light railway (DLR) a sort of autonomous monorail ( but with 2 rails ) which runs from several East of London places to Stratford. If I was staying, I'd look at the Premier Inn, in Stratford. It's not bad for the price, and right near the Velopark.

I stayed at the Stratford Travelodge(on the high street) last year when doing the L'Etape sportive and it was fine.

You can't get a non folding bike on the Tube

This is not correct you can take a non-folding bike on certain sections of London Underground outside specific hours.

Where did I say you weren't allowed to try? Good luck trying to get a full size non folder on a tube train. It's irritating enough when you have to endure someone with a huge suitcase struggling to get it into the carriage.

Stating that "you can't get a non folding bike on the tube" implies to me that it will either not physically fit or that you are prohibited from doing so.. A misunderstanding perhaps.

I take a full sized non folding bike on the central line on a regular basis (couple times a month). I have never had an issue doing so either above the need to make it easy for passengers to board or leave the train.
I find the station staff to be polite and helpful as well.

When my friend and I did Ride London, we took our bikes on the District Line all the way from Wimbledon to Barking (where hotel was) with no trouble at all It was late afternoon on Saturday

For the beat of both worlds, check out citizen M at tower bridge.

I love citizen M hotels, they are like the new generation of low cost well specified hotels.

Very relaxed and the rooms are very interesting too.

The tower bridge one is brand new and offers view across the tower of London for £150 a night.

The velo is a 20 minute ride or a few stops on the jubilee line away...personally I would ride.

Don't fancy that then there are travel lodges and premier inn's a plenty in Stratford.

One could try to take a bike on the tube from Euston to Liverpool Street, but I doubt you'd be let on at a busy time.

I'd ride from Euston to Liverpool Street and take a train to Stratford, crossing the Euston Road (on foot if need be) going south to Holborn, east toward St. Pauls, turn left to the Museum of London and then go down London Wall. It's not an pleasant ride if you're not used to London traffic, but not so bad if you're taking it easy.

I've been stopped at the gates with my folder at Bank, until I folded it. I'd be very surprised you could board in central London with a full sized bike on the lines it's officially banned (eg central line, DLR)
