I think the title says it all really. My bike has started to get selective about which gears it will allow me to use, and a quick check at the shifters confirms that the cable is getting badly frayed, which is reducing the amount of travel available.

Only this will be the third time that I have had the cable changed in what seems like an annual event. Are Versa shifters notorious for chewing cable, and is there a fix? Or do I just have to live with it or get rid?

I've seen mechanical disc brakes that were so badly designed that as the pads wore more and more cable was pulled until it was exiting directly from the cable clamp instead or around a nice smooth guide and consequently both front and rear cables snapped from the repeated sharp bending. They went within a week of each other.

Possibly your shifter has a similar design fault.
