I remember Neil Armstrong saying something like "i exercise very little as i believe our hearts are only meant to beat a certain number of times, and when that number is up.... He lived to a good age so maybe we shouldn't push it? I don't bother with heart rate monitors but i have put my hand on my chest after a long steep climb and it's been around 135 to 140 BPM. I posted the other month about my concern that my high heart rate after a long strenuous ride wasn't worrying me but the fact that it was still high 2 hours after i'd stopped riding was a worry.
