But you don’t know the lorry’s there till it’s there, unless you’re shoulder checking every 10s. Would you cycle through 6” of cow s*** all the time?

Cycling through 6' of cow s##t is a specific sport in some counties. Shorter riders are advised to take a snorkel.

Not that I'm condoning the lorry driver who clearly got it wrong, but why didn't you move over into the cycle lane if there was one to go into ?

If a lorries coming up behind me I get out of the way pdq and as far away as possible. -

From what BOAB describes, it sounds like shared path alongside the road, rather than a cycle lane. Moving into it would presumably have involved mounting a kerb, which can be risky at speed, particularly with an artic up your chuff.
