One for the cycling historians out there:

In Andre Leducq's autobiography, he describes picking gears for racing in the early 1920s. Because they were on singlespeeds then, the choice of gear is crucial, so he will say things like: "I decided on a 46x13, while the Swiss chose 23x7". Er, how can you have a 7-tooth cog :laugh:? I guess they must have had finer chains than now, like 1/2" pitch?

Don't think it is a typo as those sorts of numbers occur several times in the book...

They were using a skip link or block chain ring with only half as many teeth.
