I have some scans of the lighting section of a 1947 Cycling Manual that might help to answer some questions on vintage lighting, what was around, the regulations of the time, etc...

As in all collecting these days the name matters most.

Check out Lucas King of The Road early carbide lamps like this:

.

Once you have a name then condition is very important - little wear to the finish and complete and correct glass throughout.

I know a man who has several hundred (and many thousands) carbide lamps. Not just bike ones but really old car and motorcycle ones as well as numerous railway and ship lanterns. They're all hid away out of site in his garage.

That Lucas lamp. Would it be sacrilege to want one with an LED conversion?

NT has converted a rather feeble dynamo lamp on Granville the shopper with the innards of a head torch.

There might be those who'd consider it sacrilege, but if you wanted a vintage bike with a vintage lamp, but actually wanted to use it, then I don't see the problem with upgrading it. It could probably be done with minimal damage, if one was careful.

Perhaps if it was the last of its kind, it should be preserved, but otherwise, why condemn it to being feeble when it could be useful.
