I am wondering whether I should ever read To The Lighthouse. Not because I anticipate it being at all entertaining or enlightening, but because it is the only book in the the top ten British books from this survey that I have not read yet.

I'm not at all sure about this 'after Shakespeare, Dickens and Austen' stuff ! Knock out 'Middlemarch' from the top spot on that list and it looks better.

If you've read Mrs Dalloway, you'll already have some idea of Woolf's style. I think, if I remember rightly, that I preferred The Lighthouse but for me it was one step up from Dalloway, not 3 or 4 steps up.

Shakespeare, tried reading some, gave up, unreadable.
Dickens more readable than Shakespeare, but not my cup of tea.
Austin, the wife likes her.
Virginia Wolf, don't know anybody who has read any of her stuff.

Better than Shakespeare is a very low bar, even Dan Brown can do that

Trouble with Shakespeare is it's full of cliches

Go for it, if you don't like it you can always stop.

That's an interesting list albeit not particularly British, and having series/trilogies in there seems like cheating.
