"Jo is a Professor of Visual Analytics at City University London. His research and teaching interests are in the design and construction of visualization for exploring, analysing and communicating patterns in complex datasets. He has particular interests in visual analytics of data that have a geographic component. He is the course director of the postgraduate degree in Electronic Publishing that enables students to develop their skills in assembling data, stories and services for electronic media. When not working he can often be found cycling around the UK. In recent years he has been lucky enough to combine work and play by collaborating with planners and transport agencies developing visual analytics applications for understanding cyclists' travel behaviour. "

Crucially, this kind of data visualisation on city maps illustrates that streets belong to people and are the movement network where the richness of urban life is played out by humanity.

I definitely recommend watching this video, people. It will be 15 minutes well spent .

It's a pity we can't use similar data in Melbourne, but thanks to a well-known cycling-related law Australia has, the use of our hire bikes is extremely low, and I'm surprised it's still running. So the statistical value of our hire bike usage is very limited (in my opinion).

I've quickly zoomed through with the sound off, and I want to watch it properly, though it will have to wait till I get up!!

Visualisation is a brilliant tool

Years ago we ran a Saturday morning stall in Gosport Market or Bike Week

We had a large map of Gosport and asked people to draw their joiurneys

It was a mess at the end of the day, but highlighted lots of areas where improvements could be made.

These included making unofficial shortcuts official, investigating why some areas had virtually no cycle traffic and addressing thise issues.

It worked very well

Just watched it with the sound on, and really enjoyed it, and wishing I was still studying at Uni now, with all the new methods of data collection (well in comparison to 20 years ago).
