Just a small start to see all sides of the world. I think the earlier you start with most things, the more accustomed they see it as normal life.
I cannot disagree.

To me the elderly and lonely, locally must be a good start...but...and sorry to make this sound shallow...I can't imagine it's much fun, for a 3 and 6 year old.

Could there be a way to allow this kind of early experience, which I think admirable, whilst being a bit fun and inspirational.

Could they go and muck out at one of the disabled riders stables...see the horses and ponies, get used to people with disabilities...maybe even get a ride in occasIonally

Below are some London based groups......taken from the main website.

That looks good. I do a bit of work with a similar cycling charity but it's very difficult to get to with kids at the weekend and I always like to keep things local where possible.

EDIT:
Ha!! Aldersbrook, very close to school!!

Volunteering at 3 and 6?
They should have been in work by now surely?

Seriously though, if they already do clubs and stuff then probably instead of worrying about getting them to understand the world around them they probably would remember this time better as when they did stuff, any stuff, with Dad. The world around them changes fast enough to try to get a handle on when they have all the tools of maturity as it is, let alone trying to make some sense of it at such tender years.

I was just thinking of how much value a 3 year old child would get from volunteering really, I know it was hard enough getting mine to do anything that I wanted him to do while the distractions of soil to eat in the garden and ants to jump up and down on were there, so the notion of having him helping me at all and actually learning anything was nothing but a fleeting illusion really.

Not a lot, more for the 6 (nearly 7yo) but it's fun to do stuff together as they're split up moist of the week at school/nursery

Go to the park, climb trees, learn the different leaf shapes, splash noisily in puddles, chase ducks, get dirty in boggy mud. Then let your kids do it.

As an aside I listened to an interesting TED podcast and one speaker talked about the 5 dangerous things your kids should do

1. Play with fire
2. Own a pen knife
3. Throw a spear
4. Dismantle a house-hold appliance
5. Drive a car (on parent's lap).
