Hi

Can anyone give me any information? My dad has a very old cycling map/book called "W & A Bates" and was made in 1863 Leicester. Anyone know much about this?

Thanks
Andy

Just had a look at it. Looks very old but as you open it their is a statement dated 1910 about Tyres. The map is a dirty yellow with routes in red.

Bates started as a manufacturer of elastic webbing (for leicesters glove manuf industry) and was later taken over by Dunlop. 1863 is more likely to be the companies date of establishment.

I know a quite a about Bates and Co, like they were the first company to produce solid rubber tyres for bicycles and they also supplied Robert Edlin with all the materials to build the first pneumatic tyres. Despite what Mr Dunlop claims.
