Wahoo Roam died….what to get next?

Have you ever moved planned routes from cycle.travel to it?
I can see it claims to link to my Varia radar light, which is good.
Any issues with rain & the touch screen?

Harder to ignore the keen price given my level of cycling….

& then I see iGPS sport and Magene devices also at decent prices…..hmmm….

I’ve ridden pr over 10,000 miles with my Garmin 1030 plus, in at times extreme heat and rain, it’s never once activated a different function. The only issue I’ve had is when I updated the firmware, my nephew sorted it out and we concluded it was probably something I did wrongly.

I’m open to other brands, but for me one of the big requirements is the Satnav being clear. I havent seen anything better yet, but if there is something with a clearer image and better functionality let me know.

I’ve had wahoo bolt v1 and then v2 for the last 10 years. Both very reliable. The v1 had a moment when the firmware had to be updated affecting all units of that vintage. It’s never been quite the same since, taking longer to acquire signals and the speed being very sketchy. That has now found a use on the commuter where it really just serves the rear Varia rtl515 radar. The v2 is my main navigation tool for weekly rides. When that gets replaced it will most likely be with a wahoo roam or bolt v3. My only hesitation is the compatibility with my newest Garmin Garmin rearvue 820, it works with the wahoo just like the rtl515 but pairing it with a top end Garmin makes more use of its extra functionality eg seeing what lanes cars are in. I’ll probably stick with wahoo for the buttons but it is a consideration.

Just FYI you can lock the Garmin touchscreen as the touch of a button to prevent this. Maybe Bryson have the same feature?

9 years! And I still think of Wahoo as the disruptive "new kids on the block".

It can be sensitive to water but I tend not to use the touch screen once the route is downloaded. I've downloaded routes from strava, komoot, garmin without hassle. Mate doesn't appear to struggle with his garmin varia. The software isn't as intuitive as garmin or wahoo. Personally I went with it because of its price and I couldn't find any really bad reviews. It's certainly more reliable than the garmin edge touring things I had previously.

So my Wahoo Roam V1 has died.

It served me well: bought primarily as a tool for a 19d LEJoG back in 2020, it never got me lost (well, only a little when I wasn’t paying attention), tracked my journeys, uploaded them to Strava, hooked seamlessly to the amazing Garmin Varia 515 to keep me well informed of traffic behind.
On the downsides, it was always a bit faffy to get my cycle.travel routes to download….a two-step process that wasn’t so simple.

What to replace with?
A pal rates his Bryton, but it is “only” a cycle computer to him - I want the “sat-nav” (esp cycle.travel mapping transfers) and Garmin integration.
Hammerhead came out just too late for my 2020 purchase, but looked good.

Before I dive into reviews: what are the suggestions of the hive mind here?
As a curve-ball, my latest multi-day ride was when the Wahoo died, & I had to rely on the phone alone, but that did work okay…maybe that is what I do….although I did like having a dedicated device, & I very much missed the Garmin radar warnings…

I can't say 100% if they still offer this, but if you wanted to stick with a Wahoo, they certainly used to replace them for free outside of the warranty if you had original proof of purchase. Even if you have no PoP, they may still offer a discount. I got 50% off a brand new Bolt when my screen died last year.

Contact Wahoo support if you are interested, explain what has happened and see what they say.

Definitely worth a shot. in the past Garmin have sold me replacements for old, knackered, well out of guarantee, devices at bargain prices. Although I hear they are less generous these days

But you won't know if you don't ask.
