But the Waitrose in Cambridge is excellent, with great staff and a rather good wine section...

i love a good wine, but i never knew they had a section in Waitrose for it.I'll go down today and complain about the type of people who use the free coffee offer

I'm a better class of reject, I went to Harrods. Security wanted to know what I was doing in their shop.

I was in Booths yesterday with my daughter who was bit muddy from the park a tweed clad gentleman said to me sonny I think you will will be happier in Waitrose with a street urchin like that!

Its the nearest supermarket to us so we use it and the card a couple of times a week for 'bread & milk' shops. We get a free paper every so often too. We do our big shop somewhere cheaper. We do have coffee and a bun there every so often. I might well be 'the wrong sort' as I tend to turn up in jeans and trainers rather than a twinset and pearls.

Our Waitrose seems to have a fairly eclectic mix of customers though, being the only 'proper' supermarket in town and the fact that its cheaper than the co-op too.

Waitrose wine buyers have more credibility in the wine trade than any other supermarket.
Others, of course, have some good wines on their shelves, but Waitrose's wine section is by far the best* - with no overpriced then discounted bogofs, their headline price is always competitive and the offers real, their regular 25% off all wines deals are outstanding value esp for premium wines.

* of the Nationals that is, Booths are a good match for them, but they do not come this far south, i will be in their Windmere branch tomorrow!

The French version of Waitrose has eluded me so far.

You get the usual sort, Super U, Carrefour, Intermarche, Leclerc, Casino and you have Aldi, Lidl and Netto. The same kind of people shop in all of them (except maybe Netto which is pretty dire).

Isn't the Labour Party furious about people getting a free cuppa? Something about poor, downtrodden businesses like Starbucks losing out?

I used to use the Waitrose cafe a couple of times a month until they bought in the free coffee card. You can't get near the place now, full of OAP's, I'm sure some of them are arriving by minibus.

Because the bog standard French supermarket is far closer to Waitrose than Tesco. The range an quality in Super U, Carrefour etc, I always find remarkable.

Yes, but I see they have reached Knutsford, which is dangerously close to the midlands.
It is worse than that - they have reached Northwich! At least Knutsford is slightly up market, Northwich is just a dump! (and currently lacking a lot of tarmac...)

And yes the coffee shop was packed full of OAP's last time I went in, and the coffee machine did not have a queue...
