Mankell was so traumatised by the suicide of the actress, Johanna Sällström, who played Linda in the Swedish films he never wrote another Wallender story with Linda in it. It has been speculated that Johanna suffered from 'survivor guilt' after the 2004 Tsunami.
The Swedish films are excellent fare, superior to the BBC ones I feel, though I think Kenneth Branagh captures the 'soul' of his character, as I've understood it from the English translations of the novels, slightly better in the BBC versions. But I've always been in awe of him since seeing him audition at RADA in the late 70's. He got in, I didn't on account of having more acting talent in his little finger than I had in my whole body.
The area around Ystad is wonderful cycling country I'm told by Swedish friends.
