I think more of the shots are outside in the original Swedish version. Also slightly more team members in the original. The lead character is not as gloomy either, IMO.

Luminescence - good word that.

tbh Branagh is a bit of a ham. That's the real problem with the show.

i agree dell. The Swedish series is infinitely more appealing than Branagh's efforts.

Have to say i enjoy both though.

We re-watched Branagh in 'Much ado' at the weekend. He was a vibrant thrusting young buck then, excellent acting in an excellent production i thought - and Emma can do no wrong. But seeing Branagh in todays Wallander makes you realise how much time changes us all..

I enjoy both - and I think Branagh's performance is fine. The Swedish version's better mainly on account of the supporting cast, who have more presence on their own account - their UK equivalents are a bit two dimensional by comparison. Also it is a gloomy series, and no-one does gloom like the Swedes.

Strange the things you learn on CC. I like some of the previous posters particularly liked the Swedish series. I was shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Johanna Sällström, who played Linda. I was unware of this tragic story until I read this thread.

Must say the books are an extremely good read if you like that sort of thing.

Sady I have also been watching this with Mrs. KH just for the last two episodes. I keep telling her I have a bit of Viking in me (actually Finnish/Russian), but she says that Branagh will do.

Mankell was so traumatised by the suicide of the actress, Johanna Sällström, who played Linda in the Swedish films he never wrote another Wallender story with Linda in it. It has been speculated that Johanna suffered from 'survivor guilt' after the 2004 Tsunami.

The Swedish films are excellent fare, superior to the BBC ones I feel, though I think Kenneth Branagh captures the 'soul' of his character, as I've understood it from the English translations of the novels, slightly better in the BBC versions. But I've always been in awe of him since seeing him audition at RADA in the late 70's. He got in, I didn't on account of having more acting talent in his little finger than I had in my whole body.

The area around Ystad is wonderful cycling country I'm told by Swedish friends.

That, I'm afraid, is the miracle that is HD. Make-up artists haven't got to grips with it - and actors are hating it. Every spot shows!

Welcome aboard! The Kid had her RADA audition this morning - she stands next to no chance, but thought it would be good experience nonetheless. We haven't heard, so I'm thinking it didn't go that well........

a typographical error, since corrected.

Anyway, haven't they demolished all the nice bits of Horsham?
The Station is a splendid listed example of a pre-war Southern Railway building, the ancient farm houses on North Street and Hurst Road are still characterful and intriguing, The Causeway was very nice yesterday when I walked down it, the Cricket Ground remains a classic of the genre, and the Victorian bits over the back of the Dog and Bacon were in fine fettle on the weekend. So we have a few nice bits still.

That said I'll grant you the building of Albion Way was an act of utter vandalism and 'County Hall North' aka some old office block More Than no longer need is as bad a piece of modern commercial development as you can find in our fair land. But given the monstrosities of gross commercial hubris that surround it perhaps it can be forgiven.

I won't be posting as workhard, one of my many interweb alter ego's, any more as my original, albeit renamed account, has now sprung back into life after obstinately refusing to cooperate this morning

Godspeed The Kid then. I took my failure as a sign and flounced out of the acting profession; I don't necessarily recommend that as a response, but in my case it really was no ones loss.
