Yes, but he is working for a standard contracting company doing new builds.
Q. Do dustnen get to take thier vehicles home and use them for weekend camping ?

My Daughter provides a vehicle for her employer - The NHS. They do pay towards mileage, but if they had to supply a lease car it would cost them a whole load of money.

Most employers where travel is a required and significant part of the job I think. If most of the work is on one site for months at a time, then unlikely, I agree.
So eg all the builders working for Wimpey or Redrow get company cars? I don't think so.

Neither do I, since most of them are working on one site for some time. Travel between sites is not a significant part of their job.
That is his situation eg he is at St Helens (10 miles away) for some time. A month ago he was in Yorkshire and they arranged his hotel.

My thoughts, having had several company vans, make sure the tools are all secured to the van, i.e ratchet strapped down, in the event of a crash you don't want to be showered by tools & other bits & bobs flying forwards, speed limits, the vast majority of vans are 50 mph single carriage way signed for national speed limit, or 60 Mph dual carriageway, 70 Mph motorways, in some places the camera van sits on the bridges over A Roads, A19 on the North Yorks/Teesside border springs to mind, it really needs to be Euro 6 as many places now charge per day for non compliant vans, I think Bradford charge £15 per day, whilst ignoring clapped out diesel cars, check out the stainless steel plates that cover the recognised areas for breaking into vans, try to find one with no windows in the back doors and a bulkhead between the cab & load area for security, if he needs to carry passengers at weekends, consider a crew van with rear seats fitted from the factory, also he'll need business use cover on the insurance

My dad had a Citroen Berlingo van and another similar but can't remember. He found them more expensive to buy and run etc, but also missed the visibility you lose when reversing. So he went for a VW touran and took the seats out. It's very handy if you don't keep tools in it overnight. I guess vat on a 5k van is £875 but think there were other additional costs as well like insurance etc

My old man had a Berlingo van, but when change came, he got the car version and took out the seats. He'd retired but did a bit of part time gardening for friends for beer money just to keep busy.
