Hi, I am finally getting round to a road bike, after circumstances ruling it out last year.

I am not a mega cyclist, don't need and can't afford the best of.

But I will spend up to £500. I am 5ft4in, would like it to be lightweight and speedy, with drop bars.

Please suggest a few for me.

Does it have to be a ladies-specific roadbike? The Decathlon triban is £300, is a natty red and got a super review in Cycling Active this month (92%) - also comes in small frame sizes http://www.decathlon.co.uk/triban-3-id_8167038.html You can use the extra cash for toys, a nice ladies saddle and/ or any adjustments (bars, stem)

Ladies specific bikes sub £500 are quite a rare beastie

Giants get good feedback - the Avail 3 is "around" the budget http://www.rutlandcycling.com/34619/Giant-Avail-3-2012---Ladies-Road-Bike-.html

Or there's a Trek option http://www.rutlandcycling.com/39885/Trek-Lexa-C-2012---Ladies-Road-Bike.html

Spesh Dolce's seem to start around £650

Evans have a few choices from smaller brands, including their own pinnacle

http://www.evanscycles.com/products/fuji/finest-30-2012-womens-road-bike-ec031236 - Fuji, has the better Sora, while the others mainly have 2300

http://www.evanscycles.com/products/pinnacle/gabbro-one-2012-womens-road-bike-ec035890 - Pinnacle, £100 of accessories

If you're ok with buying sight unseen - this looks well specced and light at sub 10kg http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=75449

Otherwise, there's always second hand

Listen to your peers. Spend the £200 on decent pedals, shoes, cleats and clothes!
I'm buying the triban for commuting after looking at the 2nd market for a decent commuter bike

Really?? But it's red! and you could easily spice it up with a white saddle, bar tape, coloured tyres

I have one funky road bike, so I guess it would suit me ok...

but it's 25% over your budget which you don't want to pay

I actually think that is dull - black bikes do nothing for me, like grey!

Have you considered eBay?

Fuji would be a bit girly for me, but hey...yes, go to a shop... Fuji is £550, Evans often have deals and vouchers, sign up for their newsletter!

I have a Specialized Dolce 2011 and love it,however the spec is quite low and I've had it a year and already looking to upgrade. It does depend hoe "into" cycling you get if you get me.The dolce is a great starter bike though.
