I think they're a cheap screen that would prefer to be run at a lower resolution and refresh rate.

Yes, it's funny that you say that is I've always thought the screen was poor. When we got the iMac I noticed the screen was nowhere near as sharp as the ilyama screen we had on the PC. Small text was quite hard to read were as it was pin sharp on the ilyama display. It was my first inkling that Apple were not what they were cracked up to be.

This may have more to do with differences between the ways Windows and OS X display fonts on screen than with poor build quality of the display. Long-time Windows users will often complain that fonts on the Mac look 'blurry', while long-time OS X users often see Windows fonts as 'jagged' or 'squashed'. Yes, I'm in the mood for 'scare quotes' today.

oi, your twisting my words! I said "they're due to a cheap screen" not "They're a cheap screen"

the screen on my mac is the sharpest display i've used, its the auxiliary monitor plugged in as an extra screen thats slowly dyeing - but dad did get it from aldi

Did you have to ask to speak to a manager Mr. Pig?

Yes, we got passed up to a Polish guy! ;0) Took three calls and we had to make it clear that we were not going to go away or give in until it was sorted. What I think swung it was explaining to them that we knew all about the fault, that is was very widespread, that they were already getting sued over it and they had already agreed to fix other people's displays free of charge. What I think is terrible is that other people who may not be as clued up about the fault will just accept their first answer and be hundreds of pounds out of pocket. Hence this thread! ;0) If this thread saves one person the cost of fixing their Mac then it's worth it.

Or those stupid enough to pay it !

Yes well ;0) It was my son who wanted it. In fact, to be accurate, it was my sister who wanted him to get it. My sister is a director at Intel and she was quite exited about the fact that Apple were moving over to Intel chips. She loves Apple stuff. My son was looking at getting an IBM T42 laptop but she said she'd give him money towards the Intel iMac if he fancied one of those. He didn't take much persuading! ;0)

He loves the iMac and is not at all keen on the idea of going 'back' to a PC. He really likes Tiger, Pooh or whatever today's operating system is and the iMac does look great.

"they're due to a cheap screen" not "They're a cheap screen"

What's the difference? The iMac screen is not as good as the ilyama was, it just isn't. In fact it's not as good as the Fuji or HP laptops we have either. Maybe on a par with the Dell laptop my other son has. Other iMac's may well have a different screen, I've seen better Apple displays myself, but this one is really not brilliant.

the difference is, what you quoted me as appears to describe the iMac's screen when in actual fact I am talking about a 3rd party Digimate screen bought from aldi about four years ago.

Update:

We picked the iMac up from the repair centre yesterday and all is well. It looks like they've fitted a new LCD screen but no work ticket or receipt was provided so I don't know what else they've done. They've also fixed/replaced the DVD burner.

So hat's off to Apple for sorting the problem out. Big minus points for being reluctant to do so, and for not doing it for everyone, but the lesson is, persevere.

Question now is what to do with it. As a number of people have seen a recurrence of this fault, and as it seems unlikely that Apple will continue to repair the thing free of charge indefinitely, I feel inclined to sell it and buy a computer that can be repaired more readily and cheaply. But it's my son's computer so it's his call, and he's an Apple snob! ;0)

I suppose thats one thing about PCs, you can replace parts as and when. Much as I would Like to buy an Apple Mac i`m reading more and more about issues with quality and as they seem to be sold with quality in mind I don`t see them as value for money.

Yip. I've got a good mate who sorts out any PC/laptop problems I have. Never charges much. You try getting an Apple computer fixed in a similar way, forget it.

I think my son's Mac is very cool looking and works really well but after this nonsense I would never buy one. I think he should sell it and buy a laptop but I can't see him doing it. Mac users are a bit like Saab drivers, we know they do it but for the life of us we can't figure out a motivation other than the desire to look smarter than the rest of us ;0)

That depends very much on your know-how. With the exception of Mac Pros, Apple do indeed seem to have a policy of 'no user-serviceable parts inside'. But that doesn't mean you *can't* open them up and mess about with them.

But I don't want to mess about with it, I want to fix it! Which is tricky if you can't get the parts.

The internals of modern Macs are no different than those of modern PCs. What parts are you having trouble finding?
