Tip rules can be weird.

When my mum moved house I shifted a load of stuff in a hired van. While I was there, before I loaded it up, I nipped to the tip with a few odds and ends in the van, because that was the only vehicle I had. Big mistake. No vans allowed. I had to park round the corner and carry the stuff in.

That wouldn't be allowed at ours - no pedestrian access permitted (supposedly on safety grounds).

Oil comes out of the ground, doesn't it? So there's no reason not to just put it back there when you're finished with it. Stands to reason dunnit.

There was a bit of fuss, but all I had was two bin liners full of plastic plant pots. Eventually I wore them down.

You make it sound soooo simple!

As a keen car hobbyist I self service my 4x4 once a year (engine takes about 7ltrs and then often additional oils related to the four wheel drive system. I also do an annual oil change on my wife's car (4-5ltrs). Add to this two sons with cars that also usually come home to do their servicing with dad and it isn't unusual for me to legitimately have 30-40 ltrs of used oil each year without being a commercial producer.

To save running to the tip every time I do a job I have always saved it in an old plastic 25ltr drum and taken this when it gets close to full.... Except recently the tip has tried to restrict deposits to a maximum of 10ltrs! GREAT....

I'm a responsible, honest person but I'm being made to feel like my sensible and environmentally friendly approach is somehow bad or dishonest in someway. It's almost like they would prefer me to go away and pour it down the drain or something?

It would be - though it would be a lot slower unless they employed a lot more operatives.

It is the same at ours. I don't drive so I am not allowed in unless I cadge a lift or go by taxi!

Apparently, I am supposed to walk to the gate, stop, and call an attendant. The attendant will walk over to the gate and I should then hand any waste over. This avoids the highly hazardous issue of either of us walking one extra step through the gate!

That gate threshold is deadly. Every year several hundred tip employees die simply arriving for work.

Mind you, at least the surviving colleagues know in which bin to dump the cadaver.

Why do you think I said "supposedly"? I have no idea why they believe it more dangerous to walk in than to walk about once in.
