i did another 30 miles monday,only drank less than 750mls and forty on sat,drank 1500mls but no cramp,i must be a contender for the tour soon

Dehydration is definitely a cause for cramps and so is lack of salts that help electrical functions of the muscles. Now I'm not saying that these are the only two causes but do represent a fairly large portion. And if I have had a good night on the beer and dehydrated I suffer cramps at this time more than any other. so dehydration is a cause of cramps as I said it may not be the only thing to cause it but it is a contributing factor.

The pros use quinine tablets to combat cramp, so as has been said, tonic water is worth a go.
