I don't normally go down the waterproof pants route. I know you get wet with sweat.Usually just put my cycling tights on the radiator and they are dry for the commute home
However thought it may be a good idea to buy some if it's going to be as wet as last year.
I don't want to spend a fortune but don't want cheap over trousers like oilskins.
What do the cycle chat collective recommend based on experience ?

Don't bother. You will just get soggy legs from sweat! Iv tried cheep ones and expensive ones (used to work in an outdoor shop so had my pick!) The only ones that were any good were some bergaus ones that had zips and poppers up the full length of the outside so you could unzip them but just have the poppers holding them together so you had a big vent... solved the sweat problem but then rain/tyre spray would shoot in from the back wheel!

I find as long as my feet are dry my legs don't bother me. I have some decent winter tights with a windproof layer on the front. Stops the wind chill on wet soggy days.

or rain shorts are better, IMO, than pants.

I have some that I keep in my panniers in winter - only ever use them occasionally when there's an absolute deluge. I got them after such an occasion when I'd ridden to Dr's appointment and was sat in the waiting room with rain water dripping off me! Sounds funny, but I was absolutely freezing.
I rarely use them, use them more often when I'm out walking TBH. But good to have when needed.

I use Berghaus Paclite (GoreTex) pants for dog walking and hybrid cycling and they are comfortable and work brilliantly. Little bit expensive though.
