Looking for a wax jacket that will be used mostly for dog walking, a bit of f!y fishing, and general day to day wear, trips to the pub etc. Used to have a Barbour International Duke which fit the bill but I found the quality to be not all that (probably because it's the fashion arm rather than serious field stuff). Anyway it got nicked so I'm looking to rep!ace it with a Barbour Corbridge which is a similar style but hopefully a bit more robust. Have found one for £189.

Anybody got any ideas for an alternative or where to get one even cheaper?

The Corbridge is padded isn't it?

If it is it'll be warm, I've got a couple of unpadded jackets and they can still be quite warm.

I don’t know where you live but if are somewhere in the North, a trip to Barbour outlet shop in South Shields is worth a visit for a bargain. I got a full length poachers/ gamekeepers wax coat for under £200, it should have been over £400. It has pockets for hiding your booty😉

Barbour do have a factory shop, but, clearly that information is of little use, unless you are in the area (https://www.barbour.com/gb/)

Edit: oops, I see Webbo2 beat me to it 🙂

Yeah I'm not that close but I'm in Galashiels on Saturday so might be able to convince the other half to divert there on the way home.

If you do go head right to the back of the shop and there's an end of line/seconds section, completely random what's there but some bargains to be had if they've got what you're looking for.

Not waxed cotton for me anymore. Army surplus goretex or its equivalents or Ridgeline brand for that use case.

Shirley the sites Dapper Dan, AKA @Accy cyclist can make some recommendations?

Shirley?! 🧐 Surely you mean surely!!🧐 As for wax jackets, I've never owned one as I'm not keen on them. Each to their own, regarding the OP, but to me they aren't dressy/formal enough. Also they aren't warm enough for me in autumn/winter when one tends to wear them. I much prefer my two Cordings tweed field coats, both in a heavy 23 ounce weight cloth and teflon covered to repel the rain. I'm also not keen on a waxy finish, imagining it gets all over car seats, other clothes etc. However I do have a Fred Perry wax Harrington jacket in gold colour. I bought it when nearing the end of my 'mod' phase, realising soon after that one reaches a time when one has to stop dressing like one is 30 years younger than one actually is!! 🧐

Hoggs of Fife?

I’ve bought boots & a waxed coat from there
Very good quality

Mine’s brown though

Whilst I've not bought their wax jacket, I can vouch for Hoggs generally. Their moleskin trousers are my standard wear outwith summer.

I did have a Barbour back in the day, but frankly it wasn't really much cop. Cold and clammy with a lot of condensation if it actually rained and it wore through the creases very quickly given I only wore it occasionally and wasn't a farmer or gamekeeper.

I'd not dismiss a cheap lookey-likey wax jacket from the farmers market though.

My standard jacket is a Paramo. Not everyone likes them but for me they make by far the best outdoor gear I've ever owned

Saw Hoggs and decided that the prices were so low that the quality must be questionable. Thanks for all the info everybody. Love the Harrington Accy. I had a green one back in the day. Didn't look as cool as you though!
