Not waxed cotton for me anymore. Army surplus goretex or its equivalents

This^^^.
Had a barbour years ago and although useful in the dry it became as useful as a cotton sieve in the rain, regardless of how often and how well applied the re-proofing was. Modern materials are much better IMO.
Would you wear a wool jersey when out on your bike?

Fair comment but I already have goretex stuff for hiking. I found my Barbour to be a good combination of warm and waterproof for everyday use and dare I say it I like the look of a wax jacket and the way it wears in and looks a bit distressed/retro.

Shirley?! 🧐 Surely you mean surely!!🧐 As for wax jackets, I've never owned one as I'm not keen on them. Each to their own, regarding the OP, but to me they aren't dressy/formal enough. Also they aren't warm enough for me in autumn/winter when one tends to wear them. I much prefer my two Cordings tweed field coats, both in a heavy 23 ounce weight cloth and teflon covered to repel the rain. I'm also not keen on a waxy finish, imagining it gets all over car seats, other clothes etc. However I do have a Fred Perry wax Harrington jacket in gold colour. I bought it when nearing the end of my 'mod' phase, realising soon after that one reaches a time when one has to stop dressing like one is 30 years younger than one actually is!! 🧐

That's a quality looking jacket.

I believe there’s a shop in Accy’s manor which sells army goretex I think a friend of mine but a Swedish army outfit to go detectoring in.

Nothing springs to mind!🤔 There was one that closed about ten years ago that might've sold such clothing, and we had an army and navy shop that closed, must be 20 odd years ago.🤔

I've tried a few different Barbour jackets on this week and the Corbridge is a real favourite now I've seen it in the flesh. I'm hoping to call in at Hoggs of Fyffe tomorrow if I get time on my way home. I checked out some online reviews and was pleasantly surprised at how much love their wax jackets get despite the very low price point. I also have a Barbour shop to check out next week at one of those outlet villages.

Not to heavy and stiff for general walking?

Looking for a wax jacket that will be used mostly for dog walking, a bit of f!y fishing, and general day to day wear, trips to the pub etc. Used to have a Barbour International Duke which fit the bill but I found the quality to be not all that (probably because it's the fashion arm rather than serious field stuff). Anyway it got nicked so I'm looking to rep!ace it with a Barbour Corbridge which is a similar style but hopefully a bit more robust. Have found one for £189.

Anybody got any ideas for an alternative or where to get one even cheaper?

I’ve got the earlier version of that jacket now pretty battered in brown wax cotton, I like it, the fit is nice and slim so looks a bit smarter and more modern than an old Beaufort or Bedale

This is one I’ve got, it’s called Uncle Harry’s coat and was brought out celebrate the 125 anniversary of the original. It would make a great shoplifting coat or for robbing banks as you could hide your shorn off no trouble.😉

Turns out that Hoggs of Fyffe only have a factory outlet (apart from their approved stockists obviously) which is closed at the weekend so had to abandon that plan.
