Define "proper winter" please?

Gorgeous little things they are! Never seen one live..

they have already been in the London area. saw some a year or so back, but from a distance. great little birds.

a Bittern arrived at the London Wetland Centre three weeks ago - cold weather usually follows it.

Yes!!! That is indeed a proper winter!! :bravo:
And you're saying we're likely to have one of those this year? I'll be over the moon if you're right!

They were spotted in York last week apparently. I saw a flock a couple of years ago, in the tree opposite my flat.

Reminds me of a few years back there was a flock of Waxwings seen at Titchwell in north Norfolk. I cycled all the way there to see them, but they had moved on when I got there. While I was there, I heard that a larger flock were eating rowan berries in a supermarket car park about 200 yards from my house!

I got 4 cats, so the odds of be ever seeing one are slim. Therefore, winter will always be mild!

So, for a forum with a lot of members who claim not to be swayed by hokum and other mumbo jumbo, basically what you are all saying is that the weather can be predicted by a few birds and some cats??

tis not hokum and mumbojumbo, it is watching signs and patterns. a bit like sseing cloud tyopes and knowing what that means for the weather

Brilliant photos, Reiver.
Well worth checking out every bird in a flock. Back in 1996 there were three or four very large flocks roaming around Nottingham - probably 700+ individuals in total - and in among them was just one Cedar Waxwing. It was only the second ever seen in the UK (still is, AFAIK), and certainly the first I was able to see on a bike ride from home (the UK first was in Shetland!).
