How come you're opting for the A683 instead of the actual route between Caton and Wray? ....apart from the chuffing big hill, it's a lot more pleasurable than that road.

The people who come a cropper are usually the ones who take the descent too fast and find that those bends are tightening as they go round them. They risk crossing to the wrong side of the road and encountering traffic coming the other way. I think the falen rider I saw had done that, overbraked, gone over the bars and face-planted on the road.

One rider died on that descent as a result of hitting a dry stone wall - link. Another as a result of hitting a tree.

Still, I don't think it should be necessary to walk the bike down - It should be safe if the descent is shown the respect that it deserves.

Yes. Better to come off the cycle track at Caton and take the obvious curving road through Brookhouse to then briefly rejoin the A road, which is OK along there, with decent sight lines, but not generally pleasant as it's busy.

You can, and I do, go up the road from Brookhouse over Caton Moor. There's a couple of kilometres of paved track at the top bit, with three gates, then you drop back down to Wray avoiding the A road altogether. That is, however, a bit hilly and also slightly further so it won't save any time, but would be nicer. Presumably it's not the official WotR route though.
