Ways to celebrate a 'significant' birthday

I'm not really after suggestions rather I'm interested in hearing about if other people had done something interesting and novel...

I had a glider lesson for my 30th. Very cool!

Went to a local museum. Sadly, I recognised many of the items in it from childhood.

Just so you know what not to do if it's a very significant zero-ending b'day.

On next 0 day, may even be one of the exhibits - "Yes dear, those are what we called downtube shifters".

50 a week before Xmas last year. Not into parties; just wanted the family. We rented the holiday cottage on Lewis we normally go to in May and saw the Hebrides as never before. I'd expected the days to be as 'short' as the summer ones are 'long' but in fact the diffrernce from England, while evident ws not all that great. Light and the colour of the landscape were however completely different. Really weird to be at Calanish at 13:00 with shadows that felt like 22:00 in June - we ended up feeling almost 'jet lagged'. Overall though the weekend was an absolute hoot.

Flew back to Glasgow and got the sleeper to London. With hindsight we were very lucky not to be caught out by the snow that fell on/after the 22nd.

I was persuaded to do something special on my 40th by my running club mates. We went down to Skern Lodge near Bideford in Devon. Dead good, it was. Particularly as they had to move us into a hotel as the teachers from The Oratory prep school refused to have us in the same bunk house as them. Activities included jumping off a bridge at high tide, rafting, surfing, an assault course (sort of) and archery. The rafting was hilarious. Basically the two rafts just attacked each other and threw each other in the river. The assault course was really a number of climbing obstacles, but they were hilarious too. One of the obstacles was a pole with a platform on top. We had to climb the pole, get onto the platform and jump onto a trapeze. One of the girls got stuck for five minutes trying to get onto the platform while we wetted ourselves laughing (she's a good sport).

I had a fab 40th, Mr BP arranged for the kids to be looked after by the grandparents and booked us a trip to Rome! I had no idea, even at the airport where we were going! My birthday is a week before Christmas so Rome wasn't full of tourists, we got round a lot if the main "attractions" and had a wonderful time. Quite expensive though - 2 hot chocolates on the Piazza Navona 15 euros!

I was meant to spend my 40th riding my first century, instead I spent it sat in with several broken bones and parts missing.

Anyway, it's Mrs VCs 40th next weekend, and she will be spending the day hiking in a rain forest and snorkelling on the reefs off St Lucia.

I unfortunately had to share my 50th celebration with my nephew's 18th which is a few days earlier so it was not as memorable as I would have hoped. The day itself was a bit boring realy except for the love of my life leaving me a nice present while I was out .

Because my boyfriend and I never got married, for his 40th I arranged a stag trip for him and his mates. He'd never shot a gun before so I sent them all to the Czech republic and arranged a trip to a shooting range I am officially the best girlfriend ever

Hmmm. It occurs to me that I've never celebrated a decade birthday in any significant way at all.

9 years to plan for the next then....

I celebrated my 50th (in January) by climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge - a fantastic, unforgettable experience!

We celebrated my partner's 40th yesterday - she went wingwalking! Absolutely brilliant, and she wants to do it again now

I was 50 last February and my husband and I went on the Golden Panorama Train from Lucerne to Montreaux over five days. It was an amazing experience.
