No this is the problem with comparing apples with pears, but I wager you could buy a drum of cycle specific oil if you really wanted and save a substantial amount.
Wet lube you can buy by the gallon, but dry lube is too volatile to sell in bulk and certainly wouldn't keep for the 63 years claimed for your 5 litres of chainsaw oil.

Whilst I agree that we all need to make responsible purchasing decisions, seven quid for a 120ml bottle of lube (it's not just oil) every two years or so is simply not going to make a significant difference either to my financial situation, or to my environmental impact.

Yes it doesnt make sense when you look at it in isolation. But you are one person and oil is one resource. Now scale this up to 6 billion people on the planet, how many products did just one person purchase in a year? Times that by 6 billion and say humanity is not wasteful and has no impact. This is the tragedy.

Please don't feel judged or criticised, I'm just making a point.

I agree that there is a problem, I just don't think that the bulk buying of chainsaw oil is the solution.

Ok, with your environmental hat on, we all now take your advice and go and purchase 5 litres of Chainsaw Oil.

Ramifications?

1. Chainsaw Oil just shot up in price.
2. Degreasers price just shot up also, with the extra cleaning required.
3. Chainsaw Oil is now ultra scarce, as we all have 5 litres of the stuff in our shed/garage.
4. The amount of Chainsaw Oil now washed down the drain ends up in the environment.
5. The amount of Chainsaw Oil spilt nullifies the saving made on said Chainsaw Oil.

I could go on, but that would be just silly.

Just to clarify pricing:

Muc Off Wet Lube - £4.99
Muc Off Ceramic Wet Lube - £7.20
Muc Off Dry Lube - £5.15
Muc Off Ceramic Dry Lube - £10.35

These are widely available prices for 120ml and don't include various 10% or 15% off deals that are regularly available.

Assuming we take the most expensive. That's £155.25 for 30 years cycling...

Edit: A very brief search found Evans selling the Ceramic Dry eco refill for £59.99 for 1 litre...equating to £120 for 32 years cycling. None too shabby for a vastly superior product in my mind.

Ever heard of a coop? Also your theory is bust. The economy would shift from consumption (service driven) to production (producing value for money). In reality we would not go out at tbe same time to buy oil or in the same quantities. Its too complex an issue go into in the context of this thread

If your interested in the economics and theory behind over consumption I would read ERE by Jacob Fisker. Google it.

Your point about the price holds water, of course, but the counter point is that it's still peanuts for what you use.

Your point about the black and gunky has been proved against you I am afraid...based on your own evidence in that photo! That's just unacceptable on one of my bikes. Mine will never get in that state!

Away from home, so can't go a close-up, but you get my drift:
