Everyone can have a bad day, even us cyclists.....interesting depth perception and spacial awareness.

I guess we can both blame the black cab driver who thought that indicating as he moved across lanes into a blocked spot (thus blocking two lanes)...all at the very last minute was a cool idea...

Oh and yes...I was on the loud bike not Chitty...sorry chitty!

Uh oh. OK, I know it's easy to criticise but hopefully this is constructive and one to remember for the future. I can't make suggestions to the cyclist, but he shows little awareness of what you could be about to do.

IMO, your mistake was not doing a life-saver when you moved left across your lane, as the cyclist was visible in your mirror before you made that move about 16/17 secs into the video.

You also criticise the taxi driver for not completing the manoeuvre (and blocking two lanes) but, IMO, he used his own mirrors and was leaving you the chance to go through on his left. If he made a mistake, it was exactly the same sort of hesitancy which you showed yourself.

The cyclist was forceful but a similar level of assertiveness from you or the taxi might not have let that situation develop.

Cant strongly disagree with any of that Norm, very fairly put (as ever).

I would counter that I did spot the cyclist in the left mirror but in the "flash" of trying to guess if Mr cabbie was going for it or not, thought he/she was keeping back (like me)..which regardless of our hesitency would have been a better plan. I also think you are right about Mr cabbie using his mirrors and seeing me. Still tho, he should have used them BEFORE the manouvre and not during it, that way he would have stayed put and avoided the Hesitency and potential accident...so i stick to my opinion that the cabbie was due some critisim after all it was a red light so he knew he couldn't complete the move.

But hey, no-one was hurt.

Did anyone spot the natty goretex cover on the cyclists helmet..never seen those before!

Yeah, both you and the taxi seemed to do the same thing so can't really say one's any worse/better than the other... but then why did you (I'm assuming it's you on the m/bike) feel the need to squeeze through any further?

As you say, no-one hurt though. Live and learn.

Indeed, Jonny, and I'm glad that you took it in the way it was intended.

It's a toughie, whenever something like this happens many tend to blame everyone else but themselves. The world doesn't revolve around us on 2 wheels, we need to have a little ruminate on the bad experiences and figure out how we could have done things differently, what we might have done to have reduced the risk because no-one else is going to do it for us.

In an ideal world, after something like that, the taxi driver would ponder on his actions and his hesitancy, but he probably didn't even realise that anything happened. In an ideal world, after something like that, the cyclist may consider holding back until intentions of others' were clearer, but he'll just be blaming you for trying to close the door on him.

You can't sit down with the other parties and discuss this, though, you can only ponder on what you might do differently.

This is obviously not true of you, Jonny, as you've already considered all the alternative ways that it could have played out.

You've just gone up two orders of magnitude in my impression!!
And there was me thinking I'd already reached the pinnacle.

It's changed a little as I've swapped out that cover for a plain red one because the paint was peeling from the edges.

He He....It's a little louder than Chitty tho...just...on the subject of louder bikes, I have been a little taken by the Triumph Speed Triple and I like a naked bike, so I must say that i approve of your choice....not entirely sure about the paint job tho;)

Hang on, isn't this a cyclist forum

It was even worse when I first got it, the whole thing had the same paint effect...

Oh, then I can't tell you that I love the Speed Triple, although I think I'd like to compare it with the Street Triple, especially in R form.

One of my cow-orkers had a BMW, and when the whole mini/rover debacle happened, he drove it straight into a Triumph dealership and swapped it for a Triumph. Boy did he regret that later.
