Cant strongly disagree with any of that Norm, very fairly put (as ever).
I would counter that I did spot the cyclist in the left mirror but in the "flash" of trying to guess if Mr cabbie was going for it or not, thought he/she was keeping back (like me)..which regardless of our hesitency would have been a better plan.
Indeed, Jonny, and I'm glad that you took it in the way it was intended.
It's a toughie, whenever something like this happens many tend to blame everyone else but themselves. The world doesn't revolve around us on 2 wheels, we need to have a little ruminate on the bad experiences and figure out how we could have done things differently, what we might have done to have reduced the risk because no-one else is going to do it for us.
In an ideal world, after something like that, the taxi driver would ponder on his actions and his hesitancy, but he probably didn't even realise that anything happened. In an ideal world, after something like that, the cyclist may consider holding back until intentions of others' were clearer, but he'll just be blaming you for trying to close the door on him.
You can't sit down with the other parties and discuss this, though, you can only ponder on what you might do differently.
This is obviously not true of you, Jonny, as you've already considered all the alternative ways that it could have played out.
