Newspapers! Why do people bother to read them? Just line the cat litter tray with them if you must buy the things.

I think that explains why their sales are down. People are sick of the pettyness. The only people left who're biuying them seem to be those who like to read about nothing-celebs and footballers getting their jollies.

My letter got published ... albeit slightly edited:

http://www.independe...em-2296153.html

"If Julie Burchill used a case of a mentally ill black man murdering someone as justification for calling black people "psychopaths", there would be justifiable outrage, and she would rightly be seen as using an unfortunate incident as an excuse to promote personal prejudice. Sadly this is exactly what she did in her comment about cyclists.

"I hope that The Independent will never stop printing controversial views. But Ms Burchill's invective, as evidenced by this piece, is intellectually dishonest."

For comparison, here's the unedited version:

"I hope that The Independent will never stop printing controversial views and challenging articles: that is one of the reasons I enjoy reading it. But Ms Burchill's predictable invective, as evidenced by this piece, manages to be both boring and intellectually dishonest (or lazy) - not qualities I would expect from The Independent."

You have an excellent way with words my good man.
Thank you. I do try.

My best letter to The Independent was one about 15 years ago at the time of a previous armed forces review, satirically suggesting that private armies should be engaged in sorting out wars, instead of having state-run armed forces. Hmm, maybe I gave people ideas.

At least it was an attempt at humour. Sadly Ms Burchill seems to be a foreigner to the world of humour, and just comes across a grumpy unintelligent bag. Probably because she is, but can't see it.

I've had about three published in there this year alone.

I've also had about 2 in the Telegraph, nearly 1 a month for the past 2 years in the local, a few in redtops (some sarky ones)... almost all about cycling issues.

EDIT theres some other good letters there too (I sent one but it hasnt been published). Her tirade on Toksvig was wrong and childish too.

Amen to that. It's this kind of shock jock reporting that demonized Rottweilers, Pit Bulls and Staff Terriers.

On a side point if we say this person wasn't a cyclist but a person on a bike (which I agree with BTW) then when does a person driving a car become a driver?

Just ignore her. She's just a shock-jock, paid to stir up the average right-on liberal Independent reader into reacting.

Getting upset about her is just grist to the mill.
