As i type our eldest is beginning to pack up his things. He moves out on Sunday for Uni.It will seem so strange to have an empty seat at the dinner table. He is so excited about going away.
Because my wife wants to do only one journey with all his gear,me and our youngest will see him off from here.It is going to feel so strange for a little while.

I DREAD the empty nest. It's going to be awful after 18 years of elbows and dried Weetabix on the table.

Ha! We gained a 'daughter' this summer.

My trip to America was given my wife's blessing because my daughter was going to be at home. After I bought my tickets, my daughter got a temporary job in Greece and disappeared for the summer. No worries, younger son asked to move back in having spent the past three years in student digs but then was away for four weeks playing at festivals and recording a CD.

His girlfriend stepped into the breech.

I smiled knowingly when speaking to my wife from America, she said, 'I've given Natasha a toothbrush'

She's a natural fit at Chateau Levy.

I have managed to get from 27 to nearly 60 without anybody else in my home but I will soon be 'borrowing' a young 'un ...

My sister's 21 year old son is leaving home at the weekend and moving to rented accommodation nearby. He hasn't had to do much for himself up to this point and is keen to gain his independence, but I suspect that uncle Colin's help will often be required over the coming months. :okay:

I went to a local supermarket with him on a recent recce and gave him a few tips. For example - he picked up a 4-pack of Heinz baked beans which cost £1.59. Right next to them on the shelf were Cross & Blackwell which were only £1.29 for 4. He told me that he wasn't fussed about which he got, he liked both brands. He isn't used to controlling a budget or shopping. Food has been something that miraculously appears at meal times and does not cost anything! I explained that it might only be 30 pence difference, but if you pay 20+% over the odds for everything, that comes to hundreds of pounds a year. (I suspect that he didn't really see the importance of it, but once he starts paying for food out of a low income or Jobseeker's Allowance he should remember my words!)

I also pointed out that he should put heavy durable products such as the baked beans on the checkout conveyor belt first so they end up at the bottom of his shopping bags. He had put a dozen eggs on first, then straight into his bag, and was about to chuck the 4-pack of beans on top!

He told me that he wants to give cycling a go so I am looking forward to seeing if I can get him hooked. He is a bit intimidated by Yorkshire's hills but he has youth on his side. If he sticks at it, he should be killing me on climbs in a couple of years time.

I'll show him the local roads, bridleways and footpaths. It took me over 5 years to get a good knowledge of the area and it will be fun showing him the best places.
