I have managed to get from 27 to nearly 60 without anybody else in my home but I will soon be 'borrowing' a young 'un ...
My sister's 21 year old son is leaving home at the weekend and moving to rented accommodation nearby. He hasn't had to do much for himself up to this point and is keen to gain his independence, but I suspect that uncle Colin's help will often be required over the coming months.
I went to a local supermarket with him on a recent recce and gave him a few tips. For example - he picked up a 4-pack of Heinz baked beans which cost £1.59. Right next to them on the shelf were Cross & Blackwell which were only £1.29 for 4. He told me that he wasn't fussed about which he got, he liked both brands. He isn't used to controlling a budget or shopping. Food has been something that miraculously appears at meal times and does not cost anything! I explained that it might only be 30 pence difference, but if you pay 20+% over the odds for everything, that comes to hundreds of pounds a year. (I suspect that he didn't really see the importance of it, but once he starts paying for food out of a low income or Jobseeker's Allowance he should remember my words!)
I also pointed out that he should put heavy durable products such as the baked beans on the checkout conveyor belt first so they end up at the bottom of his shopping bags. He had put a dozen eggs on first, then straight into his bag, and was about to chuck the 4-pack of beans on top!
He told me that he wants to give cycling a go so I am looking forward to seeing if I can get him hooked. He is a bit intimidated by Yorkshire's hills but he has youth on his side. If he sticks at it, he should be killing me on climbs in a couple of years time.
I'll show him the local roads, bridleways and footpaths. It took me over 5 years to get a good knowledge of the area and it will be fun showing him the best places.
