Good point. The whole idea is that it is of low monitory value, so whilst it doesn't follow the letter of the pact. it honours the spirit.

A friend of mine bought his wife a potato masher for Christmas. He honestly though this was a good present. Couldn’t understand why he was in the doghouse for months.

Christmas without gifts?!?!?!? Sorry, does not compute, plus I've never found buying the wife a gift stress inducing. In fact quite the opposite, I quite enjoy buying gifts for the family. It's one of reasons I put up with a stressful job.

Over the years instead of buying each other presents, we tend to buy a joint present. Something we both want. One year it was a TV, another year it was a playstation another year it was a Sony Vaio laptop.
Our dishwasher conked out about 3 months ago and we are thinking of buying a new dishwasher as our Christmas present this year. I know, not exacttly traditional, but it works for us. Of course the playstation worked out much better for Mr WD than myself
, but a bit of give and take is always needed.

Pretty much the same here, we don't buy each other gifts, although we do occasionally suprise each other with something, but generally no instead we go out to a gig or some kind of event and make a day or evening of it, having fun together is what we enjoy.

You always need a backup present in case your SO gives you one unexpectedly then you can reciprocate. But you have to byu a present that has a guaranteed return if not satisfied policy during purchase. And choose the "gift wrap" option. This way, you have the least possible amount of stuff to do.
