Mancunian in self imposed exile in leafy Cheshire
As I rode along the country lane in the sunshine on my way to work this morning, I have to confess to slipping into a day dream about a utopia where we were paid by the government to ride our bikes to work as part of a carbon offset programme. I am not talking about cycle to work schemes or not paying any VED. No proper payments for riding our bikes to work £5 a day maybe. Then I woke from my day dream and remembered I needed to scalp the two cyclists who were in front of me on the hill I was cycling up.

Just thought I would share my musings of a morning....

That would be nice!.. I might add that to my "when I rule the world" manifesto... I might have to drop something else though to fit it in - it's already getting quite long...

I used to get 40p per mile for car use where there was no public-transport alternative, 27p per mile where there was and 15p a mile for using my bicycle.

That wasn't for commuting, but for business travel. As I rode between Departments in London, I could crank up a decent mileage.

Also, that chap Figgins, Biggins or similar is paid to ride a bicycle, although he does seem to make a bit of a song and dance about it.

Similarly, my postman is paid to ride a bicycle.

Well, farmers used to be paid for not growing certain crops. I think they are now paid to grow certain crops. All part of a strategy to control over production. If I remember correctly the strategy was used to control over production of milk, tomatoes, etc. Not sure what is the current strategy now.

So, being paid for cycling to work would not be a daft idea IMHO. However, I think the strategy is to make fuel so expensive that some people are force to cycle to work.

Great pro-active idea in the OP! Would work IMO but would have to include an element of trust in the system lest an off putting bureaucracy to go alongside.
I'm also a lucky one who gets paid a flat £20 a month to cycle to work/shimmy between sites (whenever I remember to claim).
