I went this morning. Big mistake! Strong, gusty, freezing wind. Low temps and ice on the roads. I ended up abandoning and turning for home. On the plus side, my route was exactly 10 miles, which means I've now got a perfect TT route for summer!

I'm getting on a plane tomorrow and returning to the 'homeland'. It's around 38 degrees C here and London is going to be about 2 degrees C. Just hope they have a decent fire going in the pub.

I did 16 miles today. yesterday I did a couple of jobs on the mountain bike, fix the very slow puncture, and adjust the rear derailleur as the gears were slipping. so took it out today for a test ride.
having the wind behind you is brilliant, I did 26 mph on the flat (I think that was 90% wind assisted)

But on the negative side, hit the the head wind and max speed was about 5 mph.

I poked my head out the door just after 6am and it was still a freezing wind, though not as strong. Afraid I went back to bed for a bit. I am the lightest I have been for several years and am really feeling the cold. It'll just be another longish dog walk shortly then I'm over at my Dads most of the day.

Must try harder next week.
It wasn't too bad today. great tailwind ... http://www.cyclechat.net/threads/your-ride-today.8938/post-2377031 . Only took 90 mins for the front derailleur freeze on me, rear one was starting to have issues around the 120 mins mark as well...

Managed a 70k ride this morning. I am near the south coast so no snow, and not at all icy either. However very cold with biting north wind, but I have the clothing mallarkey down to a T. It is rare that I keep a skull cap and buff on, but today they stayed put. I then had a 10 minute run straight off the bike (tri training): running with feet like blocks of ice does weird things to them in terms of blood flow etc!

The major difference this year is that the south also gets to share the cold weather.

A month of ice and snow is usually 'minor news'.

no snow here.. but my sister at Hill Farm (10miles up the road) is snowed in, has had to cancel this weeks guests at her holiday cottages, and spent the weekend digging sheep out of snow drifts. I on the other hand have barely left the flat since Friday, it's just to darn :cold: in the outside world.

You needed arm warmers in 21c?
I used to go on road training camps on the Costa Blanca in March. We went out in our summer kit since temperatures were usually in the low 20s. We'd see old Spanish men in the villages wearing heavy woolly jumpers, coats and flat caps. We also saw Spanish pros out training and they wore arm and leg warmers, lightweight overshoes, gilets, scarves, and woolly hats. Low 20s must seem cold to them!

There are a lot of wusses posting here. MTFU the lot of you and get out on your bikes. Some of us have to ride every day to earn a crust. Fail to prepare and prepare to fail. You need layers, lots of layers under your cycling jackets, inside your winter boots and thermal liners in gloves. North Face Windstopper Gore hat with ear protection and fleece hat underneath. Cycling specs to shield eyes from chill and prevent snow blindness. I haven't been cold at all.

I ride every day, well kitted and wrapped up. But I'm still going to moan!
