After commuting during the week, what are the essential things to do at the weekend to replenish bike and body?

Going to clean my bike, maybe spray some WD40 on chain? Any recommendations?

A guy I work with suggested a recovery ride of a mile or two to flush out toxins? Personally I'd only been planning on sitting on soft cushions and drinking tea!

What should the hardened commuter do to rest and refuel over the weekend?

Keep the bike clean during the week, couple of wet wipes and it's always sparkling and ready to go. Not sure about recovery rides, I always seem to have a little bit extra at the weekend so tend to go out first thing for longer faster rides.

He works in sport and fitness in education. I assumed he knew what he was talking about.
Haha. Ask him what specific toxins need flushing out!
Also I have some magic water to sell him that will re-align his exercise chi.
Being serious just have a rest if you feel you need it or go for a cycle if you fancy. If you've got too many toxins then use the toilet

I spray the front and rear mechs with a GT85 type spray every so often, also where the cables go into the frame, carefully do the pivot points on the brakes too.

I think some spray it all over the frame but not something I do myself.

I do spray the frame occasionally. Stops dirt sticking to it. I pop on a splash of chain lubricant as well after I've sprayed the chain with GT85

These days I don't cycle Friday or Saturday, on Sunday I do a long ride. The bike get washed once a week, polished once a month. Once a week the tyres get checked for debris, topped up with air if needed, the chain tension gets checked, adjusted if needed, my commuter is a fixed, the chain gets lubed if needed, if its dirty I'll wipe it with a rag first, if its very dirty I'll clean it with white spirit first and I'll check the bike over generally whilst I do it.

My weekend plan is normally to remain utterly motionless apart from my mouse hand clicking away and my eyes occasionally blinking as I play computer games for as long as possible. Unfortunately pesky house/garden work interrupts this but I try to execute my duties with the minimum physical effort. After spending all week cycling to and from work the last thing I want to do is more of it

You have to clean them???!!!

I've been known to flush out a very dirty chain using GT85, and use it as a sort of polish for grimy components doing a proper clean. In general though, best thing to do after a week of commuting is go out for a nice ride or two at the weekend

When I was working and commuting M-F, I always had Saturday as a rest day (or at least a non-cycling day) and Sunday was a leisure ride with my OH....
Bike maintenance happened on the Friday night when I got home, as a way of rounding off the week, but cleaning was something that happened at the end of each ride (so twice a day) because I commuted across country on sand and peat and used to walk into work covered in mud, so both me and the bike always needed washing at each end after both rides.

Saturday is a non-cycling day for me, usually spend time with the kids or do bike maintenance if necessary. If I'm lucky I get out on a Sunday for a longer ride. If you need a recovery ride at the weekend then you're putting too much effort into your commute. My bike cleaning involves wiping it down and give the chain a mickle if it looks dirty or sounds squeaky.

All my bikes get clened, inspected,a djusted and lubed after each ride.

The exception is my commuter, which gets done every 9 days (due to my shift pattern) and that gets cleaned, adjusted, mickled, lubed, and tyres inspected and topped up. It's 'only' a Pinnacle, but aside from a rear spoke problem (solved by stainless spoked and reverting to a back pack) it's stood up well to 2 years of commuting with a very heavy ride on rutted county roads, from high summer to winter sleet, daylight and midnight rides. Apart from the harsh ride I can't really knock it.

I've not ridden so much this year due to illness (Benign Paroxysmal Positional vertigo and a torn rotator cuff), so I'm down from 300 miles a week to less than 100, sometimes less than 25. Even so, I try and have at least one day every 9 day "week" with no exercise, and preferably not even leaving the house, as inactive and chilled as possible.
