Hi All,

Got a Hollow tech 2 external BB and ive just noticed when pushing down hard through from about the 11 o'clock / 12 o'clock position there is a noticeable clicking which then stops.

The bike has only done 600 miles and has not got wet so I cant think any dirt has got between the cups etc. I have checked the chain rings, cranks, pedals etc all to no avail only thing it would seem is the BB its happens in the saddle or out and only when I push hard through the above positions. The front mech is not the problem as it happens in all rear sprockets and there is no rub going on.

Any help would be much appreciated

Clicks in bikes are stupidly hard to find, see if you can replicate the problem without holding the bars, if not, it's your bars making the click, not the BB.

Of course, it may not be the bars, best bet is to get it to a LBS.

As the PP correctly stated, clicks can be very difficult to pin down. They can originate from anywhere on the bike and be transmitted along the frame to appear to be coming from somewhere else.

Prime candidates for clicking are:

  1. Front mech gear cable end on crank;
  2. handlebar/stem joint;
  3. stem/steerer joint;
  4. saddle/seatpost joint;
  5. seatpost/frame joint;
  6. insufficiently tightened skewers;
  7. crank arm/bb joint;
  8. bb cartridge/bb shell interface;
  9. spoke crossover points;
  10. chainring securing bolts;
  11. pedal/crank threads;
  12. anywhere else there are metal/metal interfaces.
  13. The saddle/saddle rail contact points.

In most cases, all that is required is to separate the problem joint, wipe with a thin layer of GT85 or similar and re assemble. Don't use anything other than carbon assembly paste on carbon components though.

Startat the top of the bike and methodically work through the whole machine. Do not fall into the trap of assuming any bit is ok!

Best of luck.

Ah just re-read and see you have Hollowtech II. Check and gease the bearing cups/bb shell interface.

After trying all that you'll find out it was a shoe lace hitting the crank!

I had to clean my HT2 BB out after around 500miles as it had collected a bit of dirt. It didn't look like much but the clicking stopped after I'd cleaned it and re-greased it. The job took about 30minutes to do, use plenty of baby wipes to get the clart off the BB, re-lube then put it back together.

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies

Its weird as ive only just noticed this noise and it is when I am pushing really hard past the twelve o'clock position that it occurs.

Ive checked and lubed the chain ring bolts,
pedals,
QR both front and back including dropouts,
checked front mech cable and mech
all bottle cage bolts etc
headset
stem
rear mech including hanger
Loosened left hand crank (hollowtech2) and tightened as this came up during a quick search as being a common hollowtech 2 complaint.
checked my cleats also

I dont have the BB tool to tighten or any grease otherwise I would have done that, but spoke to my helpful lbs who I got the bike from and she said it could be to do with the facing ?? bit strange I thought as surely I would have noticed this sooner, but its booked in for a check on Thursday, she said she would remove and re-grease cranks and bb etc.

Anyway in all my tinkering last night this morning I could not replicate the noise !! its gone for now !?.

Should I still take it in or leave it as it is and im worried it might come back.
