Well done to Winstanleys Bikes

Yesterday the bottom bracket on my 4 month old Dawes Super Galaxy seized completely 16 miles from home.
I took it back to Winstanleys after work this evening and they fitted a new one while I waited.
Apparently they're only guaranteed for 3 months which I was surprised about but they didn't charge me anyway .
Nor did they acuse me of using a pressure washer on it (which I haven't).

Very surprising. Did you buy the bike new, first owner?

For a bearing to sieze in that short space of time would imply that it didn't have any grease in it.

Bought new in March. Last year's model. I've done 650 miles on it. They said that I was just unlucky. It's possible that it had come slightly loose and I hadn't realised? It was only a half mile from the pedals feeling not quite right to not being able to pedal at all.

Phew! They're not cheap. I just googled it to see what the bike looked like. I'd certainly want my bearings to last a lot longer at that price.

We got it at a bargain price. £650 off! Husband found the deal on the Internet. I posted it in "found a bargain.." thread at the time. The shop is 18 miles away, so not that convenient.
I still want the bearings to last a lot longer though.

3 months guarantee for a bike that cost THAT much! Even with £650 off, it's still a chunk of change. I thought that new bikes came with a year's guarantee at the very least. The fact that it's last year's model shouldn't make any difference at all.

Who is saying that Dawes or the bike shop ? 3 months seems quite a short time to me and yes ok the bb does' get a fair old bit of stick but even tne old type cup and cone job on my bso mtb lasted longer than yours at a whisker over 2 years !

parts are covered by a one year warranty - obviously this doesn't cover any parts that have worn out because of high mileage or excessive use etc or broken due to crashes or misuse. but it will cover any part that develops a fault within 12 months. So, regarding the BB, it would only not be covered for 12 months if it was determined that it had worn out due to natural causes i.e. riding lots of miles. The fact you have only done 650 miles and that there is no indication of misuse, neglect or damage would mean that it's covered for 12 months, not 3 as they told you so they are talking BS!

Warranty or no warranty, the sale of goods act covers you here. Is it reasonable to think that a BB will only last 3 months and 750 miles, no it is not, therefore the goods are not fit for purpose.

Irrespective of what the legal requirements of the warranty are, sounds like top service from Winstanleys Doing it whilst you wait rather than having to be an appointment, 10/10
