Not my first 45+ years ago but for the second it was at home with a mid-wife. We invited family and friends and of course our first child to join us for the birth. The personalization of family and friends was very special for us. The home birth environment just added to the occasion.

I’ve been there twice. But stayed very much at the head end of the bed.
I wasn’t interested in seeing too much of the action end.
The first one was a fairly slow affair, with the cord wrapped around my daughter’s neck.
The second was my son, who only weighed 6lb and shot straight out.

Yes I was there when our daughter was born by caesarean section.😀

No idea if this is better / worse or just different than being there for a natural birth as we only had one child .😀

Never had any myself, but seemingly, my Dad missed me (and my 2 older siblings) due to various reasons.

I remember one story where he'd stoped at a cash machine on the way to the hospital and just missed the birth.
I cannot remember who, but I think it was my older brother.
We joke that he was getting the money to pay for him! 😆

I've never quite figured out if my Dad was annoyed or relieved.

Yes and no. Painted the kitchen and kept the kettle on while midwife et al staged the scene, took the cursing with good grace for the end game, fielded my daughter, was refused the opportunity to bite the umbilical cord as ‘unsanitary’ (obviously she hadn’t noticed the state of the bed), declined to let her be ‘taken in’ as she was 1 ounce ‘underweight’, and as possession is nine tenths of the law they could sod off.
Midwives were lovely ladies, much more enabling than the consultant, who was of the opinion that we would jolly well do as we were told because it was -his- department. Listen to your midwife, she has likely played the game before.

Yes, all 3 - only just made it for 2. He was 10 days overdue so they tried to induce him as my wife was sat on a ward. Very little happening by the evening so I was sent home.

I'd just got into bed when the phone rang and I had to dash down. I made it with about 10 minutes to spare. My wife said they'd popped her into a wheelchair and run down the corridors to the delivery suite.

Midwives were lovely ladies

Good point. The ones who looked after my wife after out first born arrived were absolutely fantastic. My wife ended up in hospital for over 5 weeks after the birth, and the midwives were just amazing, they really couldn't do enough for us and the late night visits seeing my son in maternity and being treated with tea, biscuits and love will stay with me forever.

Yes. 1988, emergency c-section, although I was allowed in. The medical team were superb, it was only when I was handed my son, that I realised there was a nurse stood behind where I was sat. I was told this was because so many dads faint.

Could not believe how quick they got him out from the first incision. The repair job afterwards took a lot, lot longer, although I wasn't allowed to stay for that

Hats off to all the medical professionals and, of course, to all the Mum's ❤️

Yes I was there from the start, my ex went in the night before and they said she have to wait (was breach initially) so I went home and drank beer. I came in the next day and she went into labour. I sat with her for about 3 hours until she gave birth, and I was down at the business end. I watched my son be lifted out, weighed etc and it was great. Some of the scenes I have deleted from my head though!
