"Why do it? As one of the students explains,
First, it looks cool. Second, we only had a semester so we wanted to pick something that was both feasible and challenging. Also, you can do a lot of things with the space that opens up where the spokes use to be. You can stick an electric motor in there. You can install some sort of gyro balanced storage basket. Finally, the fact that we couldn't find pictures of a real spokeless bicycle online really sealed the deal."

It puts all the weight at the rim, which will massively increase the rotational inertia (I=mr(squared) IIRC). Shows off their engineering skills, but a non starter in the real world.

+ the beauty of the traditional wheel, with gearing at the axis, is the turning leverage benefits are inherent in the design away from the dirt and water on the road... the toothed gear driving the wheel located at the perimeter would have to be rotating insanely fast ...the friction would make it impossibly hot and the gearing wpuld wear out + can you imagine the crud build up in the gears?

Just shows you can't reinvent the wheel....

All very well, but they're not going to really improve on the current concept methinks.
